Hair woes
Dryness:
Dryness can lead to hair breakage
which in turn defeats the purpose of
growing a thick and healthy afro.
Keep your hair well moisturised and
scalp from flaking with weekly deep
conditioning.
Experimenting:
It’s easy to assume that because you
have natural hair you can experiment
and manipulate it anyhow but the
truth is you have to try out new
products with caution. Always check
the ingredients and if you have to go
as far as finding information on how
many different people the product
was tested on do it. It’s your right to
protect your hair and not just believe
everything that you read. Also be
cautious of packaging that doesn’t list
ingredients.
Heat:
Some hair can withstand heat
treatments more than other. Due to
natural hair being so dry, heat is not
always your friend. If you’re going to
use heat regularly make sure that you
use heat protecting serums or oils.
Many of the natural hair care brands
are aware that wearing natural hair
straight is an option and reputable
brands will have a heat protector. If
you have very weak strands, keep
your heat services to a minimum, this
includes, blow-drying on a high
setting, flat-ironing regularly and
curling with electric hair tongs.
Scarves:
It’s been said time and time again that
cotton sucks moisture and silk and
satin preserve it. Invest in satin
scarves, not just for tie-up but also as
an accessory on those days she you
feel like covering up. When sleeping ,
use a satin bonnet or sleep on a satin
pillowcase. Satin Bonnets are
available at Clicks stores.
Lack of nutrition:
It’s important to have a healthy diet to
have healthy hair. Your everyday
foods should have some sort of
nutrients for your scalp and hair. If
not you may need to invest in a daily
supplement that’s developed to target
hair. When hair supplements work,
you’ll slowly notice a reduction in
shedding and breakage. Strands won’t
necessarily appear thicker but the
shedding will be far less. Give the
supplements time to work. Don’t
expect a turn- around time of one
week. You can find supplements at
pharmacies.
Stress and illness:
Sometimes stress or an imbalance in
your body exhibits it’s self through
breakage and shedding. So pay
attention to what is happening in your
life when your hair starts to fall out
.Find a coping mechanism before you
loose more hair. If it means you need
to see or speak to a medical
practitioner, make an appointment.
Stop the problem before it continues.
